Fly into the picturesque airport at Dunedin, located a short drive west of the city. Pick up your hire car - you can choose from a number of different firms who have kiosks at the airport. If you are driving from Dunedin, just head west out of the city and head for Balclutha.
Balclutha is the nearest large town to the Catlins, your destination - a scenic region of native forest, wildlife, and rugged coastline. Located on the Clutha River, it is the eastern gateway to our beautiful area.
Continue on to Papatowai and 14 km ahead you will see the signpost to your Base Camp, McLean Falls Eco Motels and Holiday Park. Just look for the smiling Frog.
The Catlins McLean Falls Holiday Park is conveniently located 600 meters passed the Cathedral Caves entrance, when heading south toward Invercargill. Look for the DOC sign on the Southern Scenic Route that indicates the "McLean Falls" turnoff on Rewcastle Road. The Camp is right in front of you. Access is off Rewcastle Road.
We are located in the geographical centre of the Catlins Coastal Rainforest Park. This remote part of the Catlins is known as “ Chaslands” and was the last place in New Zealand to receive electricity from the national grid in the 1960’s. So we are literally in the Hidden Valley of the Catlins.
The camp is strategically located on the recently tarsealed and upgraded Southern Scenic Route, so driving is a joy. Our farm and campground is at the entrance to the McLean Falls (considered by many to be the most spectacular in the Catlins) and a short 600 meters to the entrance of the tidal dependent Cathedral Caves.
Download a very user friendly Map! (will open in a new browser) or even a how to get here map. We also have a great coloured map you can download and it is also available at our Park - please just ask on your arrival. Be patient to download as they are quite large files.
